Basis Technology Helps Newsle Filter News About Companies
Rosette Entity Extractor finds mentions of people and companies in news feeds and blogs
Cambridge—January 5, 2012—Basis Technology, a leader in multilingual natural language processing, today announced that innovative start-up Newsle has chosen Rosette® Entity Extractor for use in its news tracking website. Newsle filters out the noise of social media, by focusing on what public figures, Facebook friends, and LinkedIn contacts are doing rather than saying.
“We use Rosette to help us find news about specific companies,” Newsle Co-founder Axel Hansen said. “For example, to see only Apple-related news for Apple’s board member Bill Campbell, Rosette will pick out articles that contain ‘Apple, Inc.’ but won’t catch those with ‘green apple.’”
Rosette can locate 18 different entity types in unstructured text, in over a dozen languages, and can be extended by the customer for additional entity types. This capability has been utilized in applications ranging from online news analysis, such as Newsle, to social network analysis.
“We chose Rosette because it was more accurate and faster than the alternatives we tested,” Hansen said. “Newsle processes 100,000 news sources (and counting), and tracks news on over 3 million people, so performance is critical to our service.”
“Newsle is a great example of how entity extraction can be used to find meaning in the massive amounts of data we encounter in our daily lives,” Steve Kearns, Director of Product Management at Basis Technology, said. “By locating entities in conversations as they are posted, an application like Newsle allows the end user to filter, search, and efficiently find the content that’s relevant to them.”
Newsle (www.newsle.com) lets users track their Facebook friends, LinkedIn contacts, and favorite public figures and companies in the news. Rather than what friends and contacts are saying, Newsle tracks news about what they are doing. Co-founded by Harvard University sophomores Axel Hansen and Jonah Varon, Newsle launched its site beta in early 2011.
